Soren Aabye Kierkegaard was a highly influential 19th century Danish philosopher, man of letters, social commentator and theologian. Born in Copenhagen in 1813, he would come to be regarded as the father of existentialism, before the term itself actually gained currency. His short and well known prayer has been engraved in a cursive 19th century script and encapsulates Kierkegaard's view that faith is a personal relationship directly between man and maker. It has a serenity and spareness worthy of one of the seminal thinkers of western philosophy.
